Sri Lanka will launch a new tourism mobile app consisting of seven languages for the protection of foreign tourists, Tourism Minister Harin Fernando announced.
Addressing an event, Minister Fernando said that the mobile app will register all three-wheelers and a bar code will be displayed on the vehicle for foreign tourists to scan. The Police will monitor the app and take action in the event of any incident, he said.
The Tourism Minister said this measure was being taken due to repeated incidents involving the harassment of three-wheeler drivers in certain tourist areas.
The mobile app will also consist of details of tourist attractions in Sri Lanka and tourist hotels in the country, with the involvement of several stakeholders of the local tourism industry.
A payment system has also been included in the mobile app for the convenience of foreign tourists, the Tourism Minister added.
Minister Fernando further said that the new app will be launched during the first week of March.
Also revealing future plans for the tourism sector, the minister revealed that several international sporting events are being prepared to be held in Sri Lanka to promote tourism.
